Preparing for a Notary Appointment: What to Bring
A notary appointment usually takes only a few minutes when everything is ready. Here is what to have on hand and what to expect when you meet with a North Carolina notary public.
Have the Document Ready
- Bring the complete document, including all pages and exhibits
- Fill in the document beforehand, but leave the signature areas blank until the appointment
- Confirm the document already contains the notarial certificate wording it requires
- Bring the original document rather than a copy when the receiving party requires an original
Bring Acceptable Identification
Each signer needs current, valid, government-issued photo identification that satisfies North Carolina requirements.
- The name on the identification should match the name signed on the document
- Expired identification generally cannot be accepted
- If your name has changed, bring identification that reflects the name you are signing
Make Sure Required Signers Are Present
- Every person who must be notarized needs to appear in person at the appointment
- Each signer must be aware of the document and willing to sign
- If the document calls for witnesses, arrange for them in advance
What Happens During the Appointment
The notary confirms the identity of each signer, watches the signing or takes the required acknowledgment or oath, and then completes the appropriate notarial act with a signature, seal, and journal entry.
What a Notary Cannot Do
A notary public is an impartial witness, not a legal advisor. A notary does not provide legal advice, does not prepare or explain documents, and does not choose or select a notarial certificate for a signer when doing so is prohibited by law.
If you are unsure which notarial act your document requires, ask the party who issued the document or consult an attorney before your appointment.
